PAN Amsterdam
Founded in 1987, PAN Amsterdam has grown to become an established fair of antiques, modern and contemporary art. Thus, more than 110 international galleries participate every year, showcasing a wide range of artworks. Indeed, the 45,000 annual visitors can admire and purchase furniture, paintings, sculptures, jewels, carpets, photographs, ceramics, among many other pieces. The high-quality is ensured by a vetting – a committee of experts that carefully examine each item so that they can be bought in confidence. Major fairs have a vetting, as for instance TEFAF Maastricht or Masterpiece London. However, prices at PAN remain reasonable and they are many affordable artworks to suit all kinds of collectors. Taking place at Amsterdam RAI each November, the fair gathers in one place seasoned and first-time buyers, art dealers, journalists and all art enthusiasts. Additionally, PAN Amsterdam offers a rich programme of talks, lectures and presentations.

What would you say is the DNA of PAN Amsterdam?
In 1987, six leading Dutch antiques experts, art dealers and enterprising private art lovers took the initiative to launch PAN Amsterdam, giving Dutch dealers a national showcase. Since then, PAN has evolved and become the Netherland’s leading national art fair, where art, antiques and design are presented by more than 110 art and antique dealers and gallery owners. Around 40,000 visitors find their way to the fair to see its broad range of top international art, which covers five millennia of art history. PAN Amsterdam has earned widespread praise for the quality of the objects on sale. This quality is secured by means of a meticulous vetting process. Eighty independent specialist vetting experts, organized in committees, appraise the authenticity, quality and condition of all the objects before the fair.
What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?
The participants are admitted by the selection committee from the board of directors. We are an eclectic artfair and therefore the range of participants is very wide. From Old Masters Paintings to Contemporary Art, from Design to Antiques and from Photography to Jewellery.
What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?
With such a diversity of galleries and art dealers, there is no real average buyer. I would say that the prices range from a couple of hundred euro’s to over a million.

Who is the typical attendee of PAN Amsterdam?
We’re pleased to welcome a wide range of visitors…. From seasoned art collectors to young collectors and from museum curators and scholars to socialites. PAN Amsterdam is such an eclectic art fair and so are the attendees…the common thread is the passion for art and collecting.
What are two other art fairs you would suggest?
Of course I’m a bit biased as a Dutchman, but I really think the TEFAF Maastricht is just the most amazing artfair in the world. Also Paris Photo is a fantastic fair in the most beautiful atmosphere of the Grand Palais.
