Investec Cape Town Art Fair

Investec Cape Town Art Fair is one of the largest contemporary art fairs on the continent. Moreover, it is one of the three art fairs of South Africa with FNB Art Joburg and 100% Design. It is well-known that the art scene in Africa is rapidly gaining momentum. That makes the fair’s popularity growing each edition. Not to mention the vibrant cultural community of Cape Town who truly gives the fair a precious energy. Cape Town Art Fair offers the chance to experience exciting works that are a collector’s dream. With a range of cutting-edge artists and new galleries from Africa and the rest of the world, there is indeed a diverse range of art available at the show. Equally important, the intimate feel to this event encourages an open dialogue between visitors, artists and galleries. What would you say is the DNA of Investec Cape Town Art Fair?

The DNA of Investec Cape Town Art Fair is a juncture for a dialogue between a wide range of artists, galleries and curators spanning across different parts of the world; always paying special attention to important issues of sustainability and legacy. Investec Cape Town Art Fair is the only international art fair on the continent, with an African core and the chance for African artists to be showcased on their continent. The fair provides a platform of accessibility, conversation and contemplation around contemporary art through a multitude of initiatives we establish in order to activate engagement with the city.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

We have participating galleries from all over the world; with a strong international presence. Galleries from Europe, Middle East and the USA participate, allowing new perspectives each year at the fair. The fair strives to maintain interaction with African galleries and artists. Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2020 welcomed, for the first time, North African and Tunisian galleries. Their participation strengthens one of the fairs goals to provide a platform for more voices from the African continent and create a connection between southern and northern Africa. The galleries we choose possess a cutting edge approach to art and an inclination to connect with other galleries/artists to create new forms of dialogue.

What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?

We have a mix of local and international collectors and buyers present at Investec Cape Town Art Fair. The prices of works exhibited is a broad range, presenting works from a few thousands of rands to millions of rands.

“One of the fairs goals is to provide a platform for more voices from the African continent and create a connection between southern and northern Africa.”

Who is the typical attendee of Cape Town Art Fair?

The fair is attended by a wide range of people; from collectors and the local art scene to the broader public. The interest in contemporary art from the public has increased significantly and continues to grow as the fair strives to be accessible and open to everyone through an attempt to steer away from misconceptions surrounding art as being elite or niche.

What makes Cape Town Art Fair so special?

In the past eight years of the fair’s existence, it has stood as an art fair that reflects the contemporary, Postmodern world that we are living through. The fair ignites the city of Cape Town and South Africa as a country through its vast programme of passionate connection between people and art: the perpetually-changing and globalised society in conjunction with the trajectory of art is platformed through Investec Cape Town Art Fair. An extraordinary level of networking and engagement – through the fusions of people, culture and art – is created by the fair. We continue to grow and progress as an art event that shifts with the times and encourages conversation and dialogue. Investec Cape Town Art Fair is where the fast-growing African art market and the international art world meet.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

I would suggest Frieze London and miart.
