ART021

First launched in 2013, ART021 is part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival. It  takes place annually in early November, at the same time as West Bund Art & Design. The fair has actually become a massive cultural event. As a matter of fact, it gathers at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, leading galleries, institutions and reknowned artists from around the world. In addition, quality is there and international collectors know that. They thus come to purchase some of the thousands of artworks exhibited.  The trade show is divided in two sectors: “Main Galleries” focusing on 21st century and “Approach” dedicated to solo presentations and curated projects. In brief, ART021 strives to bring regional resources and global ambitions together.

What would you say is the DNA of ART021?

3 words : diversified, dynamic, cutting-edge.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

There are five sections at ART021. ‘Main Galleries’ focusing on 21st century contemporary art, and ‘Approach’ which supports emerging galleries by applying a different pricing model. For these two sections, galleries participate through open application. The quality of the exhibitions at ART021 is ensured by a strict selection by our professional committee, which consists of a list of leading galleries’ directors across the globe. ‘Detour’ is the curatorial section of ART021. By invitation only, it investigates discourses from regions beyond the Euro-American fabricated geographic networks and canonized narratives. The curator selects galleries that match the theme.

What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?

The works on offer at ART021 have a very wide price range from 50k RMB up to 10million RMB. Many significant pieces over €1million have been sold at the fair. Buyers come from all over the world, but mainly from the metropolis of China. However, there are also an increasing number of collectors from tier 3 or even tier 4 cities come to buy art works. China is huge in terms of the size and the population. There is an important market potential.
