What would you say is the DNA of The Photography Show presented by AIPAD?

The Photography Show presented by AIPAD is an annual gathering of the best photography fine art dealers in the world. The fair, now in its 41st edition, offers an opportunity to see a wide variety of work ranging from cutting-edge contemporary work to classic and vintage modern masters and important 19th century photographs. What’s palpable from year to year is the strong camaraderie among the AIPAD dealers, which creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere as the photography community gathers in New York.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

This year’s Photography Show is a members-only fair featuring 49 galleries from the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD).

What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?

The fair will offer photographs priced from a few thousand dollars to up near a million for exceedingly rare works. Buyers range in age and consist of everyone from new, young collectors making their first forays into art buying to experienced museum acquisition teams looking for that singular, spectacular work. The common denominators are that they all share a share a love of fine art photography and understand that AIPAD galleries are respected and responsible dealers.

Who is the typical attendee of The Photography Show?

There is no typical attendee for the Show. It runs the gamut. The attendees range from professionals in the photo world, museum curators, gallerists, art historians, writers and journalists to collectors, artists, photographers, students and the culturally curious.

What strategy – physical as digital – will you adopt in medium to long term?

In the current, constantly evolving conditions, our hybrid strategy this year includes the physical show in May, opening this year in a new venue and showcasing only galleries with AIPAD membership, and a robust offering of year-round virtual programming with AIPAD Talks. We are also excited to partner with the ICP Photobook Fest to highlight the photobook community and Aperture to present two exciting conversations in the lead-up to the fair.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

For more in photography in New York in spring 2022, I suggest the International Center of Photography’s Photobook Fest running concurrently, and presented in partnership with The Photography Show. We’re also thrilled to be opening our fair during an exciting week of art alongside Frieze and VOLTA.
