ArtRio

ArtRio – Feria de Arte Internacional do Rio de Janeiro – is nothing less than one of the most important fairs on the Latin America art scene. This fair welcomes indeed around 52,000 visitors and 50 galleries. Art buyers from all over the world attend to view and purchase both work by the great masters and art pieces of up-and-coming artists to follow. Indeed, this event aims to encourage and stimulate young creation. Alongside the exhibitions, visitors can enjoy as well the informal ArtRio Talks, lead by curators, artists, collectors and art critics. The fair takes place every year in September, at the Marina da Gloria, in downtown Rio. It is the only fair in Brazil, with SP-Arte in Sao Paulo.

What would you say is the DNA of ArtRio?

Brazil is the name of our DNA!
Our efforts are very focused in strengthen the Brazilian art market by giving support to all levels of the art chain and, in parallel, develop an accessibility project targeting the democratization of art.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

Since 2016 we are focusing in bringing the best Brazilians galleries to the fair. I realized that having a very target fair, with the best of the Brazilian art – including well stablished and worldwide recognized artists along with arising names that can be big in the future, could be a point of differentiation for international collectors and curators. With this work, we promote an outstanding collectors program to connect the collectors with the Brazilian art scene.

What is the price range of pieces? Who is the average buyer?

We have artwork starting from US$ 1,000 to around US$ 1.5 MM.
Among our audience, we have Brazilian collectors, but we are increasing the number of international collectors that come every year. In 2019, we received 120 collectors from different countries, mainly from Europe. We are also very focused in developing a new generation of Brazilian art buyers, stimulating new collectors. It´s important to buy the first piece of artwork, then you will focus in studying more, looking for new artists…. And come to look for more art.

“Our efforts are very focused in strengthen the Brazilian art market.”

Who is the typical attendee of ArtRio?

We receive at each edition an average of 50,000 visitors. This number includes collectors, art lovers and general public that we stimulate to came.

What strategy – physical as digital – will you adopt in the short to medium term?

Smaller physical fairs, with reduced public and galleries, and work with all our knowledge of the digital platforms to develop new and better experiences at the online world, that will naturally return in the increase of salles. ArtRio was the first art fair to have a marketplace focusing in facility and transparency in 2018.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

My choices are Tefaf NY and Artissima.
