The Other Art Fair London

Saatchi Art presents The Other Art Fair in London, created in 2011 by Ryan Stanier as a 4-day event to promote emerging artists. The brand runs 8 shows in total, all over the globe. Indeed, along with the fair in London, there is one in Chicago, Dallas, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto (launch in April 2021). The Other Art Fair is different to conventional art shows because the carefully selected artists sell their pieces directly to collectors, without galleries working in their behalf. It gives art lovers the chance to meet the artists, and it makes the work more affordable. Collectors who are just starting out are given the opportunity to purchase early pieces from the future big names in the art world. Along with a broad variety of new art on sale, there is a full programme of talks, internative works and live art to experience.

What would you say is the DNA of The Other Art Fair London?

The Other Art Fair is a fair for independent and emerging artists to showcase their work to a new generation of art buyers. Alongside the 120 exhibiting artists, we have a full fair programme of additional features and interactive experiences that really set the Fair apart as the ‘Other’. Previous features include a Martin Parr dining club, a Brexit Photo Booth by Jasper Joffe, live hand-poke tattooing, installations by Glastonbury’s famous Shangrilart and a giant immersive, purring cat installation by Gary Baseman.

What type of galleries are chosen to exhibit, and why?

The Fair is for independent artists which makes us different than the standard gallery Art fair. The artists apply online and are selected by an esteemed Selection Committee. They then present their own work and curate their own stands at the fair.

What is the price range of pieces?

The prices range from £100 – £10,000.

Who is the typical attendee of The Other Art Fair London?

We have a really wide range of attendees which makes us quite unique for an art fair, but we tend to categorize them in 3 main groups, the seasoned collector, the young professional looking for his first artwork purchase and the trendy ‘scenster’ who comes to the fair for the experience and impulse purchase.

What strategy – physical as digital – will you adopt in the short to medium term?

Since the lockdown, we’ve had to postpone 2 of our London editions and have moved our exhibitors and their artworks online in ‘The Other Art Fair Online Studios’. We’re looking forward to our next physical edition in London from 8-11 October at the Old Truman Brewery, and we will accompany this with our continued digital and virtual presence.

What are two other art fairs you would suggest?

SPRING/BREAK is a really unique US-based Art Fair where they give curators spaces to present the work of independent emerging artists. And Frieze London is of course a classic and incredibly produced.
